Let’s Know Buxa Fort
Buxa Fort is located at an altitude of 867 metres (2,844 ft)
in the Buxa Tiger Reserve, Alipurduar district, West Bengal. It has been declared as
Heritage in the year 1982 by the Heritage commission. the first ruler of
Kamatapur. The Koch kings had taken the possession of the fort before it
was seized by the Bhutanese in the second half of the eighteenth century.
The Bhutan King used the fort to protect the portion of famous Silk
Route connecting.
The British on invitation of the Cooch King intervened and
captured the fort which was formally handed over to the British on
November 11, 1865 as part of Treaty of Sinchula. The British modified the
fort from its bamboo wood structure to stone structure. In 1930 it
converted to Prison by the British ruler. It was the most under cover Jail like
the Celluer Jail of Andaman. NETAJI SUBASH CHANDRA
BOSE was said to have been imprisoned here for some time. But still we can
find the fort is almost ruined now but still numerous visitors visit
this fort not only for the scenic beauty but to pay regards to the real
hero of our freedom struggle. Here they can here the real true
story of the British torture upon the freedom fighter and can also
visit the cells where the freedom solders were confined including the cell
where NETAJI SUBASH CHANDRA BOSE were confined. Several boards near
the fort also give the real history of this historic fort. There is a
small museum beside the fort. The utmost valuable preserves of the

Let’s Know Buxa Fort
Lepchakha is a small village
on a hilltop inside the Buxa Tiger reserve. The areal distance not being more
than 2 to 3 kms and close to the Bhotan Border. The village has a very small
population of about a hundred fifty people.
The main attraction
of Lepchakha is the view from the hilltop. There is a large ground where you
can seat on a bench and enjoy by the viewing of Dooars in front. Almost the
entire Buxa forest area is visible from here including every nook and corner. As
many as seven rivers flowing through the Buxa forest can be seen from here. Extremely
nice view of River Raidak, Jayanti, Bala
and others. They can see Alipurduar town, Jayanti riverbed, Santalabari and the
entire green cover in front of you. Turn around and behind you are the hills of
Mahakal, Chuna bhatti and Rovers point which together makes for a great trek.
People of the village
are also very unique. The Drukpa people are the original inhabitant of the
place. These people are Bhutanese in origin and have unique culture different
from the Nepalese who dominate lower part of the hills. The architecture of the
Drukpa house is also unique.
